Importance of Laylatul Qadr

Tonight on this auspicious night of the 19th Ramadhan, we approach one of the three possible dates (19, 21, 23 of Ramadhan) when Laylatul Qadr, The Night of Power and Destiny, occurs. This night has been mentioned in the Quran as a night which is better than a thousand months, where destiny for the year is decided and when the angels and Ruh al-Ameen, a highly dignified spirit, call upon the Imam of the Time, Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him), presenting to him the year’s ordained destiny, with peace descending until dawn. This was also the night when the Quran was descended to the Heavens for revelation to begin.

This is indeed a tremendous night and one in which we seek nearness to the Almighty and forgiveness for our sins. We worship Him wholeheartedly as He deserves to be worshipped. We have the example of the Prophet and his Holy Family, peace be upon them all, who would spend the entire night in devotions.

World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League wishes you all a very peaceful Night of Destiny. There are many acts of worship to engage in during this night, and we mention a select few here.

  1. Take a ritual bath around sunset, and give charity for the night;

  1. Offer two units of prayer, reciting Surah Hamd and Surah Ikhlas 7 times (for the 7 main organs: eyes, ears, tongue, hands, mouth, stomach  and private parts). After the prayer recite 70 times ‘I seek the forgiveness of Allah and I repent before him’ [astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilaih]. Be very sincere in your repentance;

  1. Place the Holy Quran in front of you and recite ‘O Allah, in the name of this Holy Book sent by You, whatever there is in the Book, including Ism al-A'azam and Asmaa al-Husnaa and the things to be dreaded, the things that may be expected and desired  (like blessings of Heaven), treat me as one of those who are free from Hell fire’.  Pray for your needs. Then place the Quran on your head and recite, ‘O Allah! I appeal to You in the name of this Qur'an and the Ruh that was sent along with it, and in the name of the Momin (believer) whose praise is contained in this Book, and the obligation that is on them, no one else recognizes the right and truth more than You.’ Then recite 10 times that you beseech Allah through the intercession of the 14 Infallibles;

  1. Recite Ziyarat of Imam Hussain (a.s);

  1. Recite Dua Jawshan al Kabir;

  1. Spend the entire night in prayer for Imam Mahdi (as), your parents, your Momin brothers and sisters, and for yourself;

  1. Read up on some fiqh matters, as seeking knowledge this night is highly rewarded;

  1. Recite Dua Makarim Akhlaq (Perfection of Manners), and whispered prayers of Imam Zainul Abideen (a.s) from Sahifa Sajjadiya;

  1. Recite Salatul Layl, the night prayer;

  1. Try to forgive everyone who has wronged you, so that you may also receive forgiveness and mercy from Allah;

  1.  Recite  Surah Qadr as many times as you can;

  1. Gift the reward of your good deeds to the Prophet (SAWA) and his Holy Progeny (AS) and to your parents. This will multiply your reward and give you the blessings of the Prophet (SAWA) and his Progeny (AS.

We pray that all believers are blessed on this wonderful night. How glorious is our Lord that He gives us bountiful opportunities to seek nearness to Him.
