Martyrdom Anniversary of Imam Ali al-Naqi (as)

Dated: April 11, 2016

On the sad occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of the tenth infallible Imam, the tenth successor of the Prophet Muhammad (sawa), Imam Ali ibn Muhammad al-Naqi (a.s), World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League gives condolences to the Imam of our time Imam Mahdi (atfs) and all believers.

Imam Ali Naqi (as) was born on 5 Rajab, 214 Hijrah (829 CE)  in the vicinity of Madina, at a place known as Surya and was martyred on 3 Rajab   in Samarrah, Iraq, 254 Hijri (868 CE) aged 40 years. The period of his Imamate was 32 years.

His father was Imam Muhammad at-Taqi al-Jawad (a.s)  and his mother Samana (s.a) was a maid with excellence, virtue and piety. Imam (A.S was not more than 8 years of age when he became the divinely designated Imam on his father’s martyrdom, yet he was the focus of the attention of Shias as their guide, and the Abbasid caliphs were extremely threatened and afraid of him. They set their hand to his exile and torture.  Mutawakkil the tyrant cailph brought Imam (a.s.) from Madina to Samarra and he stayed there till the end of his life.

This period of Abbasid rule was dogged with infighting and tension with the Byzantine empire. As such, Imam (as) was at times left in peace by some of the previous caliphs. During this time, Imam Ali Naqi (as) concentrated on imparting his knowledge to people. However, Mutawakkil’s cruelty surpassed the others’ and he set out to harass and torture Imam in captivity.

Imam ‘Ali Naqi’s conduct and moral excellence were the same as those displayed by each and every member of this sacred house. Whether in Imprisonment, confinement or freedom, in every case these sacred souls were engaged in worship and in helping the poor and the needy.

During imprisonment, the Imam had a grave dug up ready by the side of his prayer mat. Some visitors expressed concern or surprise. The Imam explained, “ In order to remember my end I keep the grave before my eyes.”

The Imam was martyred by the abbasid caliph Mutaz’s orders by poison  in Sammara, the funeral was attended only by his son Imam Hasan al Askari (as) who led the funeral prayers and arranged his burial, laying him to rest in his house.

Some sayings of Imam (a.s) are:
1. The one who spends his life in refuge of God, world's discomforts will become easy for him.
2. The one who carelessly commits sin and throws away the curtain of modesty, God will make him ignanimous, desperate and wretched.
3. The one who does not counsel with others in his matters will be harmed.
4. World is a bazaar in which one group makes benefit and the other faces loss.
5. Cracking jokes and mockery is the activity and enjoyment and amusement of foolish ones.

WABIL offers you all sincere condolences and reminds you all to follow the teachings that Imam Ali al-Naqi (as) left for our guidance.
