Birth Anniversary of Hazrat Abbas (as)

Dated: May 12, 2016

On the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of Hazrat Abbas (as), the son on Imam Ali (as) and Hazrat Fatima bint  Hizam, (sa), World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League (WABIL) congratulates Imam Mahdi the master of our time, the Ahlul Bayt (as) and all believers.

According to narrations Imam Ali (as) was very aggrieved one hearing of the future martyrdom of Imam Husain (as), so he prayed fpr a son to help and support him in his mission. He sought a woman for marriage who was from a brave noble lineage. Hence his marriage was arranged with hazrat Fatima from the warrior Kilabiya tribe.  Hazrat Abbas (as) was born in 26 AH (647 CE) in Madinah. History records that he did not open his eyes until Imam Husain (a.s) picked him up. The first and last face he saw was Imam Husain’s.

Hazrat Abbas (as) spent his life serving the Imams of his time and his sisters, Zainab and Umm Kulthum (sa) as if he was their servant. The love and protection that he afforded them was incomparable.  He was raised in the lap of loyalty, knowledge and devoutness by his mother and father. At every juncture he was by his father Ali (as)’s side – even as a young 15 year old he showed immense strength and courage in the battle of Siffin. After Imam Ali’s martyrdom he served Imam Hasan and finally Imam Husain, laying his life down at Karbala.

Hazrat Abbas (as) is a paradigm of virtue and the perfect role model for us. The word that most aptly sums up his life is ‘loyalty’. He was unflinching, focused, and firm in his loyalty to the Imam of his time. This teaches us that we need to be precisely the same – unflinching, firm and very focused in serving Imam Zamana, the imam of our time, despite distractions and obstacles. The role of a believer is not to swerve, question and give in to worldly pressures and constraints, but to be focused, spiritual, and above all else, loyal.

We pray that with every breath, we follow the example of Hazrat Abbas (as)’s loyalty by remaining steadfast with our Imam (atfs).
