Lessons from the Greatest Martyr Imam Husain (A.)

Dated: May 22, 2015

Today, on the Islamic date of 3rd Shaban, the World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League (WABIL) congratulates the world on the birth anniversary of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him and his holy family [pbuh&hf]), the third Imam / divinely appointed leader of the Muslims after the Prophet, Imam Husain (peace be upon him), the son of Ali ibn Abu Talib and the Prophet’s daughter Fatima (peace be upon them both).

Imam Husain (pbuh) is known as the greatest martyr in Islam for the huge sacrifice of life and family that he offered to save the faith from corruption, in 61 A.H. However, this focus on his martyrdom often means that people overlook the joy that his birth brought to the Prophetic household in 4 A.H, and the wonderful message of peace, worship and love that his pious life embodied. The Prophet (pbuh&hf) said: "They (Hasan and Husain) are my two sweet-smelling flowers in this world.” He always described them as his sons. He further stated, "He who loves Hasan and Husain, loved me, and he who makes them angry has made me angry." Several times when Imam Husain (pbuh) entered the mosque as a small child the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) would put him on his lap and tell his companions that, “this is Husain, look at him and remember him”. He also said: “May Allah love who loves Husain”.

The Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) stated that ‘Husain is from me and I am from Husain’. This did not just mean biologically, but that the Imam’s life, from childhood to maturity, was in propagating, serving, and indeed saving the faith, an inheritance indeed from the Prophet. Imam Husain invited people to the word of God with love and kindness. He worked humbly and tirelessly for Islam. He was so precious as a child that the Prophet of God would prolong his prostrations when Imam Husain climbed on his back during prayers. Indeed, he is such a blessing to the universe that the Prophet declared that both Imam Husain and his brother Imam Hasan (pbut) are leaders of the youth of Paradise.

Imam Husain left us a legacy of wonderful advice, such as: neighbourhood is the best kind of kinship; helping others stands for goodness of heart; hospitality promotes worship; when other people turn to you in need, consider it a favour of Allah, do not be wearied of this favour or it will move onto someone else. Such wise statements are just as relevant today as they were 1400 years ago.

Today as the Heavens and the Earth rejoice, WABIL extends its warmest wishes to all on the coming to the world of this exemplary saviour for mankind, Imam Husain and wishes that Muslims and all humankind take more lessons from this great divine Leader.
