Eid Ghadeer: The Event of Ghadeer Khumm

Dated: October 2, 2015

On the joyous occasion of Eid al-Ghadeer, World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League (WABIL) extends its heartiest felicitations to the imam of our time, Imam Mahdi (atfs) and all believers. This is the day when the Prophet Muhammad (sawa), by divine instruction, appointed Imam Ali (as) as his successor, his inheritor, his executor, to lead and guide the Muslim community. This is a highly virtuous day about which Imam Ali Raza (a.s.) has said that on the day of judgement four days will be presented before Allah(swt) with such glamour as that of a bride - Day of Friday, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Azha and Eid-e-Ghadeer - and the day of Eid-e-Ghadeer will be the most distinct and will be like a moon among stars.

Eid-e-Ghadeer has been described by Imam Jafar e Sadiq(as) as the day that will be the brightest day on the day of judgement and will be presented among other days just like moon among stars. Imam Ali Riza(as) has described this day as a day of great virtues and special Aamal (prayers and duas) have been instructed for Momineen and Mominaat.

In the tenth year after migration the Prophet performed Hajj with his followers. On his return to Madinah, at the pond of Khumm, the Prophet received revelation:

"O Apostle! Deliver what has been sent down to you from your Lord; and if you don't do it, you have not delivered His message (at all); and Allah will protect you from the people ..." (Qur'an 5:67)

The Prophet ordered the crowd of over 100,000 to stop.  A makeshift pulpit out of camel saddles was constructed for him by Salman al-Farsi (r.a). As many people had already gone far ahead, the Prophet (sawa) sent horsemen to bring them back for his very important announcement. He then mounted the pulpit, and despite the heat of the day, he delivered a sermon for over three hours, quoting over 100 verses of the Quran. At the end of the sermon, the Prophet said (now known as the famous Hadith al-Thaqalayn, Hadith of the Two Weighty Things):

"It seems the time approached when I shall be called away (by Allah) and I shall answer that call. I am leaving for you two precious things and if you adhere to them both,  you will never go astray after me. They are the Book of Allah and my Progeny, that is my Ahlul Bayt. The two shall never separate from each other until they come to me by the Pool (of Paradise)."

Then the Messenger of Allah continued:
"Do I not have more right over the believers than what they have over themselves?"
People cried and answered:
"Yes, O' Messenger of God."  The Prophet replied, "Allah is my Leader (mawla) and I am the leader (mawla) of believers.”
The Prophet (sawa) then held up the hand of  Imam Ali (as) and said:
“For whoever I am his Leader (mawla), 'Ali is his Leader (mawla). O' God, love those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him."
[InnAllahu Mawlaya wa ana Mawla kullu mumineen…man kuntu Mawla fa’hadha Aliyyun Mawla…]
Immediately after this the final and last revelation of the Quran descended:
"Today I have perfected your religion and completed my favour upon you, and I was satisfied that Islam be your religion." (Qur'an 5:3)

It was therefore clear that Allah would never have left the ummah of the Prophet without a successor, one whom the Prophet had raised, one who had served Islam his entire life and was also an infallible, a pure guided servant of Allah.

This is one of the most joyous days for believers, for no other than the faithful, brave, humble, loyal, devout Ali (as) could be worthy of leading the Muslims to success in every walk of life.
There are various recommended acts of worship on this day, as listed on our website in a separate upload.

Today as the Heavens and the Earth rejoice, WABIL extends its warmest wishes to all the universe on the appointment of Imam Ali (as) as the successor of the Prophet (sawa)!
