Condemnation of Easter Suicide Attack at Gulshan Iqbal Park, Lahore.

Dated: March 28, 2016

World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League (WABIL) condemns the devastating suicide attack in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park of Iqbal Town, Lahore, Pakistan on Sunday evening. 69 people have been declared dead by emergency services with hospital sources adding that over 250 were injured. We condole the government and people of Pakistan. WABIL extends its deepest sympathies to the families of those killed, and the injured.

The attack has been claimed by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan Jamaatul Ahrar. This disgusting, cowardly and criminal act was timed to be carried out on Easter Sunday when the Christian community was out with families commemorating Easter. The murderous terrorists targeted a children’s playground, killing women and children.

We cannot express our shock and sadness in words. Pakistan has become a dangerous place where Pakistani citizens are not even free to celebrate their religious events and rejoice in their identity of being free citizens. While the Punjab government has declared a three day mourning period, WABIL condemns the fact that eye witnesses are reporting that there was no security at all at the park. The loss of life where minority communities such as our Christian brothers are attacked is indeed a blur on Pakistan’s lack of protection and security.

We urge the government of Pakistan to bring the perpetrators to justice and to take affirmative action to regain the confidence of its Christian community. WABIL offers its support in these efforts, and stresses the need for Pakistan to wipe out the terrorist scourge which seems to be over-running the country.
