Condemnation of Chapel Attack on Coptic Christians in Cairo
Dated: December 13, 2016
World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League (WABIL) condemns the appalling suicide attack on the Coptic Orthodox Christian community in Egypt. The suspect Mahmoud Shafiq Mohammed Mustafa, detonated a belt of explosives inside a chapel adjacent to St. Mark's Cathedral, the seat of Egypt's ancient Coptic Orthodox Church. The over 100-year-old chapel was packed with worshippers. 25 people are feared dead. The dead included more than 20 women and children. Forty-nine others were injured, according to the latest figures from the Health Ministry. WABIL offers its condolences to the families of the victims, to the injured, and to the people of Egypt who are suffering from terrorist elements.
According to emerging reports the suspect was apprehended by the police two years ago for his links with an extremist organisation. This vile cowardly act of violence against the peaceful Coptic Christians is a direct result of the brainwashing by salafi wahabi terrorist mentality that sees all others as potential targets to kill.
Egypt’s minorities have suffered since the Salafi resurgence in Egypt. However WABIL stands with the people of Egypt especially the Coptic Christians in their period of grief, and we stand with the government of President Sisi. We urge the government to trace the terrorist cells that are wreaking havoc in the otherwise peaceful multi-faith country with a rich ancient history of tolerance and civilisation.
