Condemnation of Attack on Husainiya and Shias in Nigeria

Dated: December 15, 2015

World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League (WABIL) condemns the utterly appalling attack by the Nigerian army on the Husainiya of Zaria since the 12th Decemeber.  Although we are still unclear as to the cause of the attack and the chronology of events, WABIL nevertheless outright condemns the attack on the Husainiyia in Zaria, Kaduna state, and on the residence of the top Shia cleric in Nigeria, Shaykh Ibrahim Zakzaky. According to reports many shias have been killed in this attack, including the second in command to the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Muhammad Turi and the group’s spokesman, Ibrahim Usman. Shaykh Zakzaky and his wife had been arrested and taken away. The fate of Shaykh Zakzaky is still unknown but it is alleged thst his wife and son have been killed, although this is unconfirmed.

WABIL condemns this violation of the religious rights and freedoms of an extremely dignified, peaceful and senior cleric. Not only have the shias of Nigeria been attacked recently by the takfiri extremist anti-Islamic Boko Haram, but last Ramadhan in 2014 the peaceful Al-Quds rally was fired upon by the army, killing many including Shaykh’s three sons.

The Quran states in 5:32 that, ‘whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely’. Further in 4:93 we read, ‘If a man kills a believer intentionally his recompense is Hell to abide therein (for ever): and the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon him and a dreadful penalty is prepared for him.’ Thus killing, harassing, and harming believers is a grievous act in the eyes of Allah.

WABIL urges the Nigerian government and President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene immediately and secure the release of the Shaykh, and to take the murderers and attackers to account.

We are fully aware of the confusion surrounding this attack and lack of verified information: however we urge the government of Nigeria to control its army's military powers in this matter, to bring an immediate halt to the attack, and to deal with matters through negotiation and dialogue, not through violence. If the Shaykh's life is under threat, we fear the worst kind of civil unrest.

WABIL calls upon all world leaders, and all people who care about the right to life and religious worship for every human being, to condemn this attack, and to ask for the immediate release of Shaykh Zakzaky.
